Frequently Asked Questions

  • Mat Pilates feels grounded and internal. You're on the floor, working with just your body weight, and the burn comes from control: small, precise movements that build deep core strength and the kind of body awareness that carries into how you sit, stand, and move all day. It's quiet, focused work that often feels meditative once you find your rhythm.

Reformer feels more dynamic. The sliding carriage and springs add resistance and assistance at the same time, facilitating strengthening and increased mobility and flexibility. Many students describe it as feeling both stronger and longer by the end of class, like you got a full-body workout and a stretch in one.

Neither is "better," they just feel different and train your body differently. Many of our students do both and choose our hybrid memberships. Our Mat Pilates, Springboard and Yoga membership and our Reformer membership are offered separately.

  • Springboard classes include mat work with extra resistance from the springs. You're still floor-based, but the spring system mounted near the wall adds a pull and push you have to work against and with, so familiar mat exercises suddenly ask more of you. It's a great fit if you love the control of mat Pilates but want to feel the burn build faster. Thrive offers Springboard + TRX and Springbarre classes as part of one of our membership tiers.

  • Classical Pilates follows the original exercise sequence developed by Joseph Pilates, taught largely in the order and form he intended, with an emphasis on precision and flow. Contemporary Pilates builds on that same foundation with modern modifications, additional equipment variations, and adaptations for different bodies and goals.

At Thrive, most of our instructors are trained in classical Pilates, with several also holding contemporary training, and nearly all are comprehensively certified across mat, reformer, springboard, cadillac, chair, and barrel. This means you'll find both traditional and more adaptive class styles on our schedule.

  • Most new students start with Pilates Reformer Level I-II, Pilates Mat Level I-II or Gentle Yoga. These classes are designed to introduce fundamentals at a manageable pace, and instructors offer modifications throughout so you can move at your own comfort level. If you already have some experience, you're welcome to join any class on the schedule.

  • Pilates is widely used as a low-impact way to build core strength and improve alignment, which can help support a healthy back and reduce strain from muscular imbalances. That said, if you're recovering from an injury or managing a chronic condition, we recommend starting with a private session so your instructor can build a plan around your specific needs, and consulting your physician or physical therapist before beginning any new exercise program.

  • Many studios recommend 2-3 classes per week to start, which is often enough to notice improvements in strength, flexibility, and body awareness without overdoing it. As you build a routine, you can adjust frequency based on your goals and how your body responds.

  • No. Both practices are designed to build flexibility and strength over time, not require it beforehand. Instructors at Thrive offer modifications for every level, so beginners and experienced practitioners can be in the same room and each get an appropriately challenging class.

  • Comfortable clothing you can move freely in. Grip socks are recommended (though not required) for Reformer and Springboard classes. We provide mats for Pilates; for yoga, we recommend bringing your own mat, though rentals are available.

  • Boutique studios like Thrive typically offer smaller class sizes, more individualized attention from instructors, and a more consistent, dedicated space for Pilates and yoga specifically, rather than equipment shared across many different fitness uses. This often means more hands-on corrections, a stronger sense of community, and instructors who get to know your practice over time.

  • Yes. Private Pilates and private yoga sessions are available in-studio or virtually, designed around your specific goals, whether that's building strength, working around an injury, or simply wanting more individualized attention. We also host private group sessions for events like bachelorette parties, birthdays, and corporate team-building.

  • Thrive Pilates & Yoga is located at 2016 Walnut Street in Center City Philadelphia, a few steps away from Rittenhouse Square.

  • The best studio for you depends on what you're looking for, but here's what to weigh: depth of instructor training, class variety, and community feel. Thrive Pilates & Yoga is a boutique studio in the heart of Center City, offering mat, reformer, springboard, yoga, TRX, and private sessions. Unlike larger gyms with Pilates as one offering among many, boutique studios are built specifically around Pilates and yoga, which tends to mean smaller classes and more focused instructor training, and our team is largely trained in classical Pilates methodology, with most comprehensively certified across mat, reformer, springboard, cadillac, chair, and barrel rather than specializing in just one. Our students consistently point to the relationships they build with instructors as the reason they stay. We'd encourage you to try an intro class at a few studios and notice how each one feels, that's usually the clearest signal.

  • Thrive Pilates & Yoga sits a short walk from Rittenhouse Square in Center City, offering Pilates Reformer classes alongside mat, springboard, yoga, and TRX. If you're searching specifically for reformer work near Rittenhouse, look for studios with comprehensively certified instructors and smaller class sizes, both of which affect how much individual attention and correction you get during a session.

  • Thrive Pilates & Yoga, located at 2016 Walnut Street in Center City, offers classical Pilates instruction from a team largely trained in the classical method, alongside contemporary-trained instructors for those who prefer a more adaptive style. For students who want to go beyond taking classes, Thrive also runs its own comprehensive Pilates Teacher Training program in partnership with master teacher Ellie Herman, covering mat, reformer, springboard, cadillac, chair, and barrel certification, with both individual modules and a full certification track available.
